Games We Love - Destrega

Welcome to the first entry in a series we at MBG are very excited about sharing with you. Games We Love. You love them, we love them so lets talk about why we love them. Old games, bad games, red games and blue games. All of the above. What makes them special to us on a personal level. With that said, let’s talk Destrega.

Destrega made its North American release in 1999 on the Playstation. It was a 3d fighter that gave us more freedom than we were used to at the time. While the stages did have their limits, they were open and had a verticality that we had never seen in a fighter at the time. That coupled with the rock, paper, scissor type fighting system made it feel more like a casual party game. I was always bad at fighting games and I still am, so this was right up my alley.

The premise was simple: square beats triangle, triangle beats circle, circle beats square. Every attack was a combination of the three buttons, you could double up on squares or go all out with three circles. If not in melee range you would fire a projectile called a “rune” attack. If one of each button was used , you could send a very slow wide and hard hitting attack across the stage. Depending on the character you chose, would change what these attacks looked like as well but their function was mostly the same. The character design was definitely what you would expect. A ninja, your stereotypical sword and shield hero and they even had a sorceress girl who would shoot literal squares, triangles and circles.

Destrega didn’t have a ton of depth as a fighter but, it introduced me to what makes fighters so great. Previously I had always thought that who could pull off the longest combos would always win. Destrega introduced to me the nuance of them, the subtle mind games; learning when to counter, when to create distance, and when to switch it up to throw off your opponent. Destrega was easy to pick up and kept us engaged enough to open us up to a whole new genre. We loved this game, not because it was cutting edge, or introduced some crazy over the top mechanics that were revolutionary but, because it brought us together and revealed a whole new world of games for us. It gave us an appreciation for more. I still love the fighting genre and I am still awful at it. If it wasn’t for Destrega I most likely would have never picked up another fighting game. (Except Smash, everyone loves smash.)
